Figs are very famous for their health benefits. It is good for anyone to chew on 3 or 4 pieces every day. They grow on Ficus tree that belongs to the Mulberry family. Figs range from light green to black in various color shades. But all have the same property.

Can a diabetic patient eat fig?

Now let’s come to the question, Can a diabetic patient eat figs?

The American Diabetes Association recommends figs as a high fiber food that helps promote functional control of diabetes. “Fig leaf” reduces the amount of insulin needed for patients who need to regularly take insulin injections. You can chew in few tender fig leaves, on a daily basis.

Figs are rich in Potassium, which helps to regulate the amount of sugar which is absorbed into the body after meals. Large amounts of potassium can ensure that blood sugar spikes and falls are much less frequent.

So when a diabetic patient has a craving to eat sweet, they can choose to eat figs. But not the dried ones. When fig is dried, the sugar levels in it get concentrated and it will trouble the sugar levels in your body. Always try to find fresh figs to consume.

Relieves and prevents constipation

Figs are a rich source of fiber. Consumption of high fiber can promote healthy bowel movement and digestion. Constipation can be completely prevented and cured when you consume figs continuously. It also helps you get rid of diarrhea.

Helps obese people

The high fiber in figs helps to break fat in the body. Continuous consumption can help you fight obesity and reduce weight. But make sure you eat fresh figs fruits and not the dried ones. And also do not make a milk shake with it. When combined with milk, you gain calories!!

It is best to consume 1 or 2 fresh figs per day. More numbers can increase your body weight as they are high in calories.

Reduces cholesterol

The high soluble fiber in figs, helps you remove excess fat from your body. The soluble fiber also helps in healthy bowel movements in your body and hence, the excess fat is flushed out along with excrete.

  1. You can grind or mash fresh figs and apply on your face or the affected area.
  2. Leave it for 20 minutes or wait till it dries.
  3. Wash it off with warm water.

When this is regularly done for 10 to 15 days, you can see that the acne will come down and you will find relief from itching, if you had.

The anti-oxidant properties in fig helps you to fight free radicals when applied externally. It is also an anti-ageing agent.

Figs have high amounts of calcium in them. This will help you have strong bones and builds the thickness of the bones too.

  • Add a few drops of olive oil
  • Mix the contents smoothly to form a thick paste

  • Wash it off with warm water

The enzymes present in figs will remove the dead skin cells and the sugar will mildly polish the skin.

Urinary calcium loss

High amounts of sodium in diet can lead to calcium loss through urine. The high potassium and low sodium proportion if figs helps you fix the issue. It regulates the waste in the urine. It controls the calcium and flushes out the unnecessary toxins from your body. It also helps you get rid of kidney stones.

Because of ageing factor, old people tend to have problem with their vision. This is called macular degeneration. Figs help old people to fight the issue.

Word of advice: Always prefer to eat fresh figs and not the dried figs. All health benefits are through consuming fresh figs. Cooked/ baked/ dried figs tend to lose the nutrients in them – but if you aren’t able to get fresh figs, then spring for the next best alternative.
