When I start thinking about potato, immediately the tasty crispy potato fries, potato curries and potato chips come to my mind. But many of us do not know the great health benefits that potatoes have to offer.

Potato belongs to the nightshade family and there are 100 varieties of potatoes available in different sizes, shapes, and colours like white, yellow and blue. Though they differ in shapes and colours, they have similar functions while they work in our body.

Potatoes are good in antioxidants, contain vitamin C, fibre, vitamin B6, carotenoids, anthocyanins, calcium, and magnesium, zinc, iron and phosphorous. The nutrient value may change depending upon the variety. Many think that eating potatoes promotes weight gain. Regularly eating anything in an irresponsible way leads to weight gain and other health problems. Actually, adding potatoes to our diet in a moderate level is always good for our health. Research also shows that potatoes when prepared in a healthy way becomes a part of any weight loss plan. Studies have also suggested that increasing consumption of plant foods decreases the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart diseases. It increases energy, improves complexion, it is good for hair and for overall health.

Potatoes not only satisfy our taste buds but also give a number of health benefits and we will see one by one.

Skin burns and itching

This is summer season and individuals suffer from different types of skin diseases like skin rashes, skin burns and itching. Here is a good remedy for all these.

How to use:

  1. Take potato juice, add rice flour to it on that and mix it well.
  2. It must be watery.
  3. Apply it on the skin on the affected areas.

This will cure skin related problems and also cools down the body.

Potatoes are really for good oily skin. A grated raw potato can be applied as a mask by rubbing the potato gently on the face. Leave the mask on for 30 minutes and wash it off with warm water. It helps absorb excess oil in the face and prevents wrinkles.

Dark circle under the eyes

The increased use of computers in the work place results in different eye problems like dark circles under eyes, sometimes puffy eyes, muscular strain and stress.

Simple solution is to apply potato juice around the eyes using your fingertips and to do a circular massage.  Make sure the juice doesn’t get into the eyes, as it causes irritation to eyes. Take cotton balls soaked in potato juice and cover your eyes with the cotton balls. This will cure puffiness and lighten skin.

Strengthen bones

As mentioned above, potato contains iron, phosphorous, magnesium, potassium, calcium and zinc as it all helps to strengthen bones and benefit your nerve and muscle function. A balanced diet is the foundation for good bone health. A medium sized baked potato provides 926 milligrams of potassium which is needed for both men and women.

A small potato of any one variety contains between 27 and 29 grams of carbohydrates, vitamins B and C. The vitamin content helps in absorption of carbohydrates. This is an ideal diet for people who would like to put on weight.

Reduce Inflammation

The juice of potatoes helps in relieving an upset stomach, heart burns and peptic ulcers. To reduce muscle and joint pain, potatoes can be warmed and applied externally. Raw potatoes reduce infection and inflammation of the skin. Take 3 to 4 tbsp of potato juice half an hour before the meals every day to get relief from stomach acid and gastrointestinal inflammation. The soothing properties of potato juice can reduce the inflammation and burning sensation. Thick potato slices can also be placed on the infected area.

Potatoes are one of the important food sources on the planet. A research conducted showed that potatoes help to reduce the blood pressure in adults. This property is especially seen in purple potatoes which lower the risk of heart diseases.

Healthy heart

Potato contains fibre, vitamins A, B, C, potassium, iron and calcium. All these nutrients can improve cholesterol level and overall health. The significant amount of fibre helps in reducing the amount of cholesterol in blood which in turn reduces the risk of heart disease.

Take sliced potatoes, soak it in a bowl overnight and the next day morning drink this water. This treatment gives a bio-medical treatment to our body and treats muscle and joint pains – although, sometimes it may not give a permanent solution. Raw potato juice therapy may workout better.

Treats Constipation

Potato was called “Apple of the great earth”. The average adult needs 25 to 30 grams of fibre a day to ward off constipation. Potatoes are less expensive and available year round. The fibre content present in the potato improves digestion and prevents constipation.

Scurvy

Insufficient intake of vitamin C causes bleeding gums and viral infections. It is a very rare disease but occurs in some and adults and children who are on a poor diet. It can be avoided by consuming baked potatoes or drinking raw potato juice.

Prevents kidney stone

Kidney stone forms due to increased level of uric acid in the blood. Fresh potato juice not only cures inflammation and cancer but also kidney diseases.

Diarrhoea

Potatoes are energy rich diet for those who suffer from diarrhea. Have skinless potatoes baked, boiled or mashed and add some mild spices before you eat. Eating too many potatoes or adding high fat ingredients, wouldn’t be advisable when you have diarrhoea.

Potatoes are a great high carb food and is a comfort food. Boiled potatoes are low in calories and rich in vitamins and minerals. Enjoy potatoes in moderation!
