Benefits of coconut oil

Coconut oil not only has a good fragrance, but it also provides numerous health benefits. Be it for cooking or for external application, it can be used by anyone for so many reasons. It is naturally an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial agent. The fatty acids in coconut oil works as an excellent moisturizer for the skin and penetrates the skin deeply to rejuvenate the cells. No other oil seems to be lighter than coconut oil.

Coconut extract or oil is being used in many beauty products and ointments. When you can directly apply coconut oil on your skin and enjoy the benefits, why do you need cosmetics!

Benefits of coconut oil for skin and hair

Getting a massage can truly relax your body and mind. When you massage your body with coconut oil, you feel relaxed and also get a glowing skin.

Ingredients required

  • 3 to 4 teaspoons of coconut oil
  • Warm water

Method

  1. Heat coconut oil until it is warm.
  2. Cool down the oil to bearable heat.
  3. Apply the oil on your whole body and massage gently.
  4. You can massage the oil into the skin for 20 minutes.
  5. Once you complete massaging, leave the oil on the skin for 20 minutes.
  6. Take a bath using mild soap or body wash.

After the bath, you can notice that your skin is moisturized and smooth. You can follow this process once or twice a week.

For soft feet and hands

The essential fatty acids in coconut oil not only hydrates the skin, but it also makes your skin look younger. Hands and feet are most physically used body parts and are always exposed to harsh weather and chemicals. They tend to get an older look when compared to rest of your body skin.

Ingredients required

  • 3 teaspoons of coconut oil.
  • Socks and gloves to cover your feet and hand respectively.

Method

  1. Heat coconut oil until it is warm.
  2. Cool down the oil to bearable heat.
  3. Apply the oil on the feet (including cracks) and hands.
  4. Gently massage the oil into the skin.
  5. After massaging, wear the socks and gloves on your feet and hands respectively.
  6. Leave it overnight.

When you wake up in the morning, you can notice that your skin has absorbed the oil completely and your skin will look smoothly hydrated. Following this method on a daily basis will help you get rid of cracks and dry skin in hands and feet.

Coconut oil for hair

Coconut oil penetrates into the scalp and strengthens the hair follicle from the inside. This oil can nourish your hair and stimulate hair growth.

Ingredients required

  • 4 teaspoons of coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon of almond oil
  • 1 teaspoon of sesame oil

Method 1

  1. Mix all the above mentioned oils and heat it until it is warm.
  2. Cool down the oil to bearable heat.
  3. Apply the oil on your scalp and full length of your hair. (you can increase the proportion of coconut oil if you have lengthy hair)
  4. Massage the scalp gently for 5 minutes and leave the oil on the hair for 30 minutes.
  5. Wash your hair with mild shampoo.

Method 2 (with hot towel wrap)

  1. Mix all the above mentioned oils and heat it until it is warm.
  2. Cool down the oil to bearable heat.
  3. Apply the oil on your scalp and full length of your hair. (you can increase the proportion of coconut oil if you have lengthy hair)
  4. Massage the scalp gently for 5 minutes.
  5. Soak a towel in hot water for 5 minutes and squeeze it to drain all excess water.
  6. Make your hair like a bun (if you have long hair) and wrap the hot towel on your head for 15 to 20 minutes.
  7. Once the towel becomes cold, remove it.
  8. Wash your hair with mild shampoo.

When you wash your hair, make sure that you don’t remove the oil completely. It might make your hair very dry and hair might become frizzy.

If it becomes frizzy after wash, you can apply light weight coconut oil (available in stores) on your hair. It will work like a leave on conditioner.

To remove eye make-up

Applying coconut oil on your skin and removing make-up is an easy and cost effective way. Using this oil can help you avoid the harsh chemicals in cosmetic cleansers.

Method

  1. Rinse your face and eyes with warm water.
  2. Apply coconut oil on the lashes and around the eyes where you have make-up.
  3. Leave the oil for a minute.
  4. Wipe it off using a cotton ball. (make-up will come off along with oil)
  5. Use mild face wash and clean your face.

Please note, you might have burning sensation in the eyes after applying oil which is very normal and there is no harm.

Coconut oil + sugar body scrub

When you feel like using a scrub on your whole body, coconut oil + sugar scrub is one of the best scrubs to use. It is very effective and saves you loads of money when compared to cosmetic scrubs.

Ingredients required

  • 6 teaspoons of coconut oil
  • 3 teaspoons of sugar

Method

  1. Heat the coconut oil until it is warm.
  2. Cool down the oil to bearable heat.
  3. Add the sugar to oil and mix.
  4. Apply this mix on the skin and use it like a scrub.
  5. Rinse off the mix using mild soap or body wash.

The coarse nature of sugar helps to exfoliate the skin and removes dirt/dead cells. Coconut oil hydrates and nourishes the skin.

Coconut oil is also used to treat mild burns, cut wounds, rashes, sunburn, dandruff, chapped lips and even as a replacement for shaving cream. There is no harm in exploring the oil for various uses, as there are no side effects at all!
