egg hair mask

Egg is a very common food that is available in your kitchen. As we know, it has a lot of protein, minerals and vitamins. Egg can also be used as a good conditioner for your hair.

The egg yolk, i.e., the yellow part of the egg, when used alone or with other ingredients, can give you soft and shiny hair. It visibly reduces the dryness and helps to reduce damaged hair.

A eggs hair mask can be applied on hair from scalp to tip and washed off for healthy hair.

Types of eggs hair mask

Egg yolk mask

Break the egg, separate the egg yolk from the white liquid and keep it aside (number of eggs may vary according the length/thickness of the hair). Mix it with honey, coconut/olive oil and curd.

Apply the mixture on your scalp and full length of your hair. Leave it for half and hour. You can cover it with a shower cap or a plastic bag if you need.

Rinse it with mild warm water and shampoo your hair nicely to lose the smell of the egg. You need not use a conditioner post wash.

You will find a visibly smooth hair. You can follow the procedure once/twice a week, as time permits.

Full egg mask

If you don’t have time to do the above mentioned egg yolk mask, simply break the egg, mix both white and yolk together in a bowl. Beat the mix for about 3 minutes (until you see slight foam like stuff). Then directly apply on your scalp and hair.

Rinse it with mild warm water and make sure you use less/mild shampoo.

Using egg on your hair, keeps the scalp moisture intact, hence reduces dandruff and hair fall.

Egg with henna

Henna is a great hair conditioner and works well with egg. For waist length hair, mix two eggs and two tablespoons of henna powder well. There should be no lumps. Add a few drops of lemon juice and a few drops of coconut oil to this mixture and apply with your fingertips. Refrain from using brush to apply masks to your hair as much as possible.

Wash the mask off with a mild shampoo after 20 – 30 minutes. You can happily skip using a conditioner when regularly applying masks like these.

The Gram flour combination

Egg with Gram flour makes for a great protein pack.

Protein pack recipe

  • Whip two eggs, 1 tablespoon of gram flour (called Besan in India) and two spoons of lemon juice together.
  • Dilute it to thin paste like consistency so that it is easy to apply.
  • Leave it on for 15 minutes and then wash off.

This mask tends to make hair a little dry due to the presence of gram flour and hence those with naturally dry hair can go for the henna mask instead. This mask is a boon for those with oily hair and this also helps to control dandruff to a large extent.

Stinky treasure!

The only flip side of an egg mask is that, it is a little stinky! So to offset this, you can add a drop of lavender oil to the mask and then apply it. You might however have to use some room freshener for your bathroom for it is definitely going to leave a stinky bathroom for at least one good hour! You’ll get used to that!

Hope you have happy and healthy hair!
