A popular root vegetable, but not known vastly for its health benefits, radish is a great vegetable with an array of benefits for overall health.

Types of radishes

There are 4 main types of radishes:

Green radish – This is largely grown in China. It is a mix of green and white colour and is cylindrical. This radish has a mildly sweet taste.

Japanese radish – The Japanese radish is cylindrical and white in colour. It is largely used in Japan and India.

Black radish – This radish is black in colour and cylindrical in shape. It has a white fleshy interior and tastes delicious. This radish is available in various countries across the globe and is commonly used.

Watermelon radish or Rooseheart – These radishes are scarce but taste great. They have green exterior and a pinkish inside. It has a very mild flavor and is hence a popular choice for pickles. This radish is more popular in China.

Nutrition information

All types of radishes are rich in Folate, Vitamins C, E and A, Potassium, Copper and Iron. It also has healthy quantities of Carbs, dietary fiber and Pyridoxine.


Health benefits

To treat hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids (also known as piles) is a common problem. This could be due to diet, body heat, post pregnancy hemorrhoids or heredity. Whatever the reason, radish can be be a savior. While radish can be cooked and had as a gravy or a accompaniment, radish juice would be the most effective.


  1. Peel two radishes and chop into small slices.
  2. Peel and chop one white onion.
  3. Blend the raw radishes and onion along with cilantro or mint leaves.
  4. Add little buttermilk and mix. (You can add a pinch of salt if needed)
  5. Drink

For skin problems

Radish has lot of vitamin C and anti-oxidants. This makes radish a great skin care choice. You can drink the above specified radish juice but instead of white onions, add little lemon juice and drink. A radish face pack is also a great choice to remove tan and clear acne spots.


  1. Wash and peel a radish. (Preferably Japanese radish)
  2. Grate a little and squeeze the extract till you have about 4 to 5 teaspoons.
  3. Mix this juice with two teaspoons of gram flour (besan).
  4. Add a drop of glycerine or honey.
  5. Apply it as a thin layer on your face and neck.
  6. Leave it on for 20 minutes and wash off.

This face pack clears up blemishes and dark patches in the skin. It also helps to get rid of tan. You can apply this face pack once everyday thrice or four times a week.

To treat kidney disorders

Radishes have properties that help to purify the blood. Radish helps by cleansing the Urinary tract and prevents UTI (Urinary tract infections). You can include radishes in your regular diet or in your breakfast salad in the semi cooked form for best results. Radish juice is also a good way to cleanse the body.


To fight cancer

For a healthier liver

Radishes are great for cleansing the liver. They prevent constipation by flushing out toxins and help to purify blood. Include black radishes as part of your diet. You can cook them along with mustard seeds, grated coconut, little oil and dal. This can be a healthy accompaniment for rice or breads.

To treat gastric problems

Radishes can treat various stomach problems. The juice of radish stimulates the digestive juices and helps to clear the bile duct. Radish also improves metabolism and prevents problems such as indigestion and bloating.


For Asthma and Bronchitis treatment

Make a juice of radish, carrot, cumin seeds and garlic.

  1. Wash and peel 1 radish. Chop it into slices.
  2. Wash and peel 1 carrot and chop it into slices.
  3. Peel two cloves of garlic.
  4. Blend one teaspoon of cumin seeds, radish, carrot, pepper and salt together.
  5. Drink this juice to treat respiratory problems such as Bronchitis and Asthma.

Radish for children

Radish is rich in anti-oxidants and helps to boost the immunity in children. You can boil radishes and given children a half cooked salad along with olives, lettuce and some grated cheese. Along with enhancing their immunity system it will also improve their metabolism and make them want to eat more and eat healthy too.
