benefits of Wheatgrass

The young plant of the wheat before sprouting is called wheat grass. The wheat plant  triticum aestivum  belongs to the family of Poaceae. Egyptians and Mesapatomians were the early users of wheat grass. The use of wheat grass has now spread all over the world due to its innumerable health benefits.

Wheatgrass is grown both indoors and outdoors. Once the plant starts to grow its leaves split and this stage is known as ‘jointing stage’. This is when it reaches its highest nutritional value and picked for use.

Wheat grass is available in the market in powder, capsules and juice forms.

It is estimated that about 30 ml of wheat grass juice gives 10 calories of energy, 8gms of protein and 8 gm of dietary fiber. It also has a very high level of vitamin A, equivalent to 240% of recommended daily amount and 93% RDA of vitamin C .  Wheat grass also contains many vitamins, amino acids, liver enzymes and chlorophyll. In addition it has iron, magnesium, potassium, phosphorous, vitamin E, K and B.

Wheat grass is a powerful diet because it contains 70% of chlorophyll. This is a direct life energy from the sun.

Health benefits of wheat grass and how to consume?

While there are dozens of health benefits in wheat grass, some of the highly significant benefits are discussed here.

Blood Improvement

The 70% level of chlorophyll in wheat grass helps in improving level of hemoglobin in the blood.  The molecule structure of wheat grass resembles that of heme which contains iron which is very important to raise hemoglobin level in the body. More than that, wheat grass functions as blood purifier. As chlorophyll is the first product of the sun, it gives more light energy than any other type of food one may consume.

Even though we may get chlorophyll from other plants also, chlorophyll extracted from wheat grass is superior as it contains 92 out of 112 minerals from the soil.

Anti-aging agent

The enzymes and super-oxide dismutase is available in high quantities in wheat grass. This decomposes the free radicals in the body and in the process slows down aging.

Reduce Food Intake

As wheat grass contains many nutrients, consuming its juice daily in the mornings acts as stomach filling diet. It hence reduces appetite and the urge to overeat is prevented. This is because of the minerals and vitamins in the wheat grass.

Weight Loss

Daily consumption and external use of wheat grass act as a natural deodorant by removing the toxins from the skin, mouth and body.

Due to its detoxification effect wheat grass is able to eradicate the toxic heavy metals from the body.

Skin protection

The chlorophyll ointments prepared from wheat grass have bland smoothening effect and are useful in treating outer and inner skin related diseases like itching, burning of the rectum, ivy poisoning, weeping, insect bites and infections.

Lungs care

Wheat grass juice is capable of dissolving the scars formed in the lungs due to breathing of acidic gases. Since chlorophyll increases the production of hemoglobin the effect of carbon -monoxide is reduced.

Gargling with wheat grass juice cures sore throat. Keeping the juice for about five minutes in the mouth will cure tooth ache too.

How to consume wheat grass?

Wheat grass is available in the market as dried powder or capsules or as fresh juice. To derive the full benefit of the nutrients and vitamins it is suggested that fresh juice extracted from the grass before sprouting. This means, before formation of grains.

Consume it in the morning on an empty stomach for best results.
