Hangover is a feeling of sickness after drinking too much alcohol. Usually hangover occurs in the morning after a night heavy drinking. The symptoms of hangovers may be Dizziness, nausea, fatigue and weakness, headache, muscle ache, poor or decreased sleep, anxiety, depression, irritability and rapid heartbeat.

Normally hangovers may go away only after 8 hours to 24 hours. Here I have shared some of the herbal drinks for hangover relief.

Herbal remedies to get rid of hangover

Aloe vera juice

Aloe vera is best for hangover symptoms. The juice of aloe converts the ingested alcohol into non-harmful substances and helps fast digestion. It removes dehydration, headache and dry mouth symptoms. Aloe vera makes you feel calm and steady.

Preparation of aloe vera juice


  • 2 teaspoon aloe vera gel
  • 1 cup of citrus juice
  • 1 cup of water
  • Sugar or honey


  1. Take a fresh aloe vera leaf.
  2. Clean the leaf with water and allow the rind to dry completely.
  3. Cut and open the leaf and extract the gel.
  4. Keep it in a glass tumbler.
  5. Add citrus juice and water. Stir well.
  6. Add sugar or honey for taste
  7. Mix it well and drink.

Aloe has the ability to bring down the symptoms and balance out acidity. Aloe is one of the best anti-hangover remedies.


Ginger tea

Ginger is good for nausea and upset stomach. Many find it difficult to chew a piece of ginger and for those, ginger tea with honey could be the best remedy. Ginger tea contains fructose which helps to metabolize and clear any alcohol remain in our body.


  • 4 to 6 raw ginger slices
  • 1 ½ cups of water
  • Honey
  • Lime juice (optional)


  1. Scrub and wash the ginger.
  2. Peel and cut into small slices.
  3. Boil water.
  4. Add ginger to the boiling water.
  5. Boil for 10 to 15 minutes.
  6. Switch off.
  7. Pour into a tea cup.
  8. Add honey and lime juice.

Homemade ginger tea is excellent for hangover. It will soothe stomach ache and promote faster digestion.

Ginger lemon tea

Lemon juice/tea

Both lemon juice and tea are popular for hangover. It helps to digest alcohol and gives instant relief. Adding turmeric and ginger to lemon juice is also powerful. Turmeric has the ability to reduce the ethanol levels and soothes stomach by relieving nausea. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties that will reduce the pain making it a great remedy for hangovers.


  • A medium size lemon
  • A teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 slice fresh ginger
  • One glass of water
  • Sugar for taste


  1. Squeeze a lemon and extract the juice.
  2. Add this to a glass of cold water.
  3. Now add turmeric and ginger.
  4. You can also add a little sugar for taste.
  5. Mix all the ingredients well.
  6. Drink a glass of this juice.

Method of preparing lemon tea


  • 1 tea bag
  • ½ lemon
  • 1 cup of water
  • Honey for taste


  1. Boil a cup water.
  2. Steep black tea bag in the cup for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Squeeze a lemon into the tea.
  4. Add honey and stir well.
  5. Drink when warm.

Fennel tea

Consumption of too much alcohol makes the liver to overdrive. Fennel contains restorative properties which help bring the liver back to its normal condition. Add fennel seeds into a hot cup of your usual tea. This calms upset stomach, perks up your mood, and refresh your liver.

Although good old tea is a remedy for hangover, green tea is a better choice. Green tea has lot of antioxidants that clears your system well.


  • Green tea leaves or bags
  • Hot water
  • Honey for taste
  • Lemon juice


  1. Boil a cup of water.
  2. Pour into a tea cup.
  3. Add 5 grams of green tea leaves or tea bag.
  4. Leave it for 2 to 3 minutes.
  5. Strain well.
  6. Add honey and lemon.
  7. Stir well and drink when warm.

Peppermint tea

Peppermint is a natural stomach soother and is helpful for the digestive system. It is one of the best herbs that relieve flatulence, nausea, tense nerves and brings down inflammation in the intestinal tract.


  • Few dried peppermint leaves (These leaves have a strong aroma and flavour – hence just a few leaves would be sufficient)
  • Water
  • Sugar


  1. Boil a cup of water.
  2. Add dried peppermint leaves.
  3. Cover and leave it for 10 minutes.
  4. Strain the tea after 10 minutes.
  5. Add honey or palm sugar.
  6. Stir well and drink.

Centaury leaf tea

Centaury leaves are good to treat tummy problems and are also effective in relieving nervous tension.  It also keeps the nausea at bay.

Take few centaury leaves and add it to regular hot tea, leave it for 5 minutes, strain and drink.

Thyme leaves tea

Like centaury, thyme is also excellent for relieving sores, digestive distress, tired and overworked muscles. These can hence help you get rid of hangover too. Add honey and thymes leaves to your regular hot tea and this gives a good flavour and benefits are also enhanced.
