When you are diagnosed with jaundice, I suggest you go to the doctor to know the intensity and to take medications as advised to treat the infection. Although many of these herbal remedies were used as the sole medication in ancient years, you can now use these to complement the medication you are already taking after consulting your doctor. All these remedies are using simple herbs and can help you recover faster and without side effects.

Important herbal remedies for jaundice

Stonebreaker leaves remedy:

Stonebreaker leaves have properties that are found to be effective in curing jaundice. Below are some of the ways in which stonebreaker leaves can be used.

Remedy 1:

Ingredients:

  • Stonebreaker tree leaves
  • Peppercorn
  • Honey

Method:

  1. Take the leaves of stonebreaker plant.
  2. Add 8 – 10 peppercorns to the leaves and blend together.
  3. Add honey to this ground mixture to form a paste.
  4. Consume this one in the morning and once in the evening to cure jaundice.

Remedy 2:

Ingredients:

  • Stonebreaker tree leaves
  • Buttermilk

Method:

  1. Take the leaves of stonebreaker plant.
  2. Grind it into a smooth paste by adding little water.
  3. Mix this ground paste in buttermilk and drink.

Drink thrice a day for two days and you can see the fever coming down well.

Remedy 3:

Ingredients:

  • Stonebreaker tree leaves
  • False daisy (Bhringraj) leaves
  • Leucas leaves

Method:

  1. Take a handful of all the three leaves mentioned above.
  2. Grind them together in a grinding stone to make a paste.
  3. Mix this is buttermilk, add a pinch of turmeric and drink once daily.

This remedy works even for severe cases and can cure jaundice in less than a fortnight.

Banana remedy

Ingredients:

  • Banana
  • Edible Slaked lime

Method:

  1. Take a ripe banana – do not remove the peel.
  2. Add little water to slaked lime and apply the paste on the unpeeled banana.
  3. Leave it outside overnight and eat it the next morning.

This remedy will cure jaundice in 5 – 7 days.

Neem remedy

Ingredients:

  • Neem leaves (Preferably baby leaves)
  • Salt
  • Carom seeds

Method:

  1. Dry neem leaves in the shade.
  2. Powder the dried leaves.
  3. Dry roast and powder carom seeds.
  4. For one handful of powdered leaves, add half tablespoon of salt and half tablespoon of powdered carom seeds.

Consume this mixture twice a day with water and you can find the severity of jaundice reducing.

Banana stem remedy

Banana stem has excellent nutritional properties and has been used in various Asian cuisines for centuries now. The stem of banana can also cure jaundice.

Ingredients:

  • Banana stem
  • Honey

Method:

  1. Sun dry banana stem.
  2. Powder the sun-dried stem.
  3. Add honey to this powder and mix it to make a paste.

Consume two teaspoonful of this paste twice a day for good results.

Bottle gourd remedy

Ingredients:

  • Bottle gourd vegetable
  • Homemade curd

Method:

  1. Wash and peel half a bottle gourd.
  2. Grate it and save the juice.
  3. Mix the grated bottle gourd and the juice to a cup of homemade curd and stir well.
  4. Add a pinch of salt to the mix.

Eat it like a any other yogurt salad. This has excellent cooling effect on the body and can also reduce the burning sensation in the eyes due to jaundice.

Tomato juice remedy

Ingredients:

  • Tomatoes (2)
  • Carom seeds (2 teaspoons)

Method:

  1. Blend two tomatoes along with carom seeds in a blender.
  2. Drink this juice in the morning on an empty stomach.

Tomatoes flush out toxins and has properties that are beneficial to cure jaundice.

Radish juice remedy

Ingredients:

  • Radish (1)
  • Leaves of Holy Basil
  • Aloe vera pulp

Method:

  1. Wash and peel a radish.
  2. Chop the radish and cut the holy basil leaves.
  3. Blend the radish pieces, holy basil leaves and aloe pulp together.
  4. Add 300 ml of water to the blend mix and drink like a juice.

Chamomile tea

Ingredients:

  • Dried chamomile flowers.
  • Honey

Method of making Chamomile tea:

  1. Take 200 ml of water and boil it.
  2. Add 2.5 tablespoons of dried chamomile flowers to this boiling water and let it continue to boil for a minute.
  3. Now add 4 tablespoons of fresh chamomile flowers to this water.
  4. Switch off the stove.
  5. Leave the water with the flowers for a while so the decoction is a little stronger. (You can always dilute it if you need)
  6. Use a strainer and filter the decoction.

Chamomile tea can be used as a prevention than as a remedy. This tea can be had twice or thrice a week to prevent jaundice. You can see the other benefits of chamomile tea here.

Other tips

  • Always drink lots of water to keep your body cool and reduce chances of any infection.
  • Aloe vera and turmeric are great remedies and make these a part of your diet.
  • Avoid too hot or spicy foods as well as oily foods as much as possible.
  • Drink lot of tender coconut water and buttermilk.

Note: All these tips are applicable only for adults and is not for newborn jaundice.
