Remedies for dry lips

Chapped and dry lips are very common and happens mostly when the weather is cold. Though you use lip balms or moisturizers, it will not get cured completely. Though it is not a major or serious issue, it does burn or pain. When left untreated, it might start bleeding and there are chances of oral infections.

The symptoms may be – flaky skin, cracks, dryness, redness, soreness, bleeding, pain or irritation.

There are many causes other than the weather conditions. Smoking, alcohol, allergy, dehydration or vitamin/mineral deficiency can also cause chapped lips.

Natural remedies to treat chapped lips


There is no easy remedy than using oil for dry skin. Coconut oil, almond oil, olive oil and mustard oil have the properties to keep the lips moisturized. This helps to reduce the irritation and will soothe the skin.


  1. Take few drops of oil (your choice).
  2. Apply the oil on the affected area or whole lips.
  3. Leave it on the lips for a minimum duration of 20 minutes.
  4. You need not rinse it off.

You can continuously apply whenever your lips get dried. Leaving the oil overnight in your lips will also help to repair the skin quickly.

Honey is very good when it comes for chapped lips. It nourishes the skin and also hydrates, moisturizes the dry and affected skin.


  1. Take few drops of fresh organic honey.
  2. Apply it on the lips.
  3. Leave it on the skin for a long duration.

I know you cannot resist eating the honey and it is easy to lick it from lips. But you need to leave it on the lips for a minimum of 15 minutes.

The extract of cucumber has the properties to cure dry or chapped lips by moisturizing and hydrated dry lips.


  1. Cut few slices of fresh raw cucumber.
  2. Crush it or blend it in a blender.
  3. Extract the juice by squeezing.
  4. Apply the extract on the lips.

This extract has the tendency to evaporate very quickly. Hence you need to continuously apply on the affected skin. You can store the excess juice in refrigerator.

The smooth and creamy texture of the butter treats chapped lips. It moisturizes and heals cracks.


  1. Take a pinch of butter (either salted or cooking).
  2. Apply it on the lips.
  3. Leave it on for a minimum of 20 minutes.

You can apply butter many times a day. Do not swallow the butter as it might add a lot to your calories.

Tea bags

Tea bags are traditionally used to cure chapped lips. They help to increase the moisture content in lips.


Take a used tea bag and press it against the lips for 5 to 8 minutes.

If you do not have a used tea bag, take a fresh tea bag and dip it in warm water (10 ml). Use the tea extract on your lips.

You can continuously apply this extract on your chapped lips for better results.

Sugar helps to remove dead skin cells and moisturize the skin. It also restores the softness and texture of the lips.


  1. Take 1 small spoon of sugar.
  2. Mix it with few drops of honey.
  3. Apply this mix on the lips and exfoliate gently.
  4. Leave the sugar mix on the lips for 20 minutes.

Doing this process once a day will help you get back the soft lips.


Fresh milk cream

The essential fat in milk cream helps to moisturize and hydrate your skin. It also brings a smooth texture to the lips.


  1. Take required amount of fresh cream.
  2. Apply it on the affected skin.
  3. Leave it on for a minimum of 20 minutes.

You can continuously apply fresh milk cream on your skin but do not consume too much of fresh cream whenever you apply on your lips, as it high in fat.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera gel has soothing and healing effects on affected skin.


  1. Cut a fresh Aloe Vera leaf from a plant.
  2. Cut open the leaf and extract the gel like substance from it.
  3. Apply this gel on the lips.

This gel tends to evaporate or absorbed by our skin quickly, so I suggest that you continuously apply aloe vera gel on the affected lips for quicker relief.

If you don’t find aloe vera plant, you can also use the packed aloe vera gel available in the stores. Make sure that the one available in stores are organic.

Keep yourself Hydrated

Apart from the weather conditions, your dehydrated body can also cause chapped/dry lips. To avoid this, you need to keep yourself hydrated. Drink a lots of fluids. Drink minimum 8 glasses of water and juices to hydrate your body and skin.

Other tips

  • Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol.
  • Avoid carbonated drinks like colas.
  • Avoid using too much cosmetics on your lips.
  • Do not lick your lips continuously. Saliva dries up quickly and makes you skin even drier.
  • Eat lot of fruits and vegetables to get necessary vitamin and minerals.
  • Use a mild lip balm overnight.
