Lemon to treat dandruff

Dandruff on your scalp is nothing but a fungal infection called malassezia yeasts. Dandruff can cause itchiness on the scalp, hair fall and visible white flakes on the head.

It is embarrassing when the flakes are visible all over your shoulders. There are many shampoos available in the market, but treating it naturally will be the better choice since this would not cause any damage to your hair.

Evidence 1

The juice of the lemon is about 5% to 6% citric acid. It is considered also as an anti microbial spectrum against bacterial infections and fungi. The acidic effect of the juice has high potential to inhibit fungal growth (Glinksy, 2009; Guess, et al., 2003)

Evidence 2

70-75% effective : The citric acid present within the Lemon juice is most effective in inhibiting Malassezia growth over a short period of time and has the medium stability. (Kumar, 2013)

Evidence 3

Citrus, especially lemon, may be effective against dandruff and other skin problems. It is high in vitamin C, and help to restore the pH balance of the skin. Drops of lemon can be added to an herbal shampoo which also leaves the hair silky and shiny. (Potluri, et al., 2013)

Lemon to treat dandruff – DIY

This remedy is very effective and is simple to follow at home.

  • 3 teaspoons Coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon Lemon juice/extract (Use a fresh lemon)
  1. Keep your ingredients ready.
  2. Heat coconut oil in a pan for 1 minute.
  3. Let it become warm. Check if it warm enough to apply on the scalp and pour it into a small bowl.
  4. Take a fresh lemon and slice it. Extract the juice by squeezing it and add it to the warm coconut oil.
  5. Mix the oil and lemon juice well.
  6. Use a cotton ball to apply the oil on the scalp. Gently apply and let it stay for 15 to 20 minutes.

Use a mild shampoo or herbal shampoo to wash it off your scalp. Do not use hot water to rinse your hair as it might cause dryness. This remedy can be followed twice a week.
