What is nail bed infection?

Nail bed infection or simply nail infection is a an infection that affects finger and toe nails. This infection mostly starts mild and may aggravate if left untreated. Simple home remedies and proper nail care can cure and prevent the infection from recurring. Avoid handling harsh chemicals with your hands to ensure it gets cured soon.

The common cause for this infection is fungi and bacteria. Hence maintaining clean nails is crucial. The most popular remedy is soaking the affected finger nail in lemon juice. In addition to that, here are some effective home remedies to cure nail infection (or Paronychia).

Turmeric remedy

Ingredients:

  • Turmeric
  • Bermuda grass (Known as Arugampul in Tamil)
  • Edible Slaked lime

Method:

  1. Take fresh turmeric and grind on a grinding stone to make a paste.
  2. In aa blender, blend the ground turmeric, fresh bermuda grass and a pinch of slaked lime together.
  3. Apply it on the affected finger(s) liberally like a pack and wrap it with a piece of cotton cloth.
  4. Keep it on overnight and wash off the next day. (If you can keep it through the day as well, then keep it)
  5. Repeat till the infection heals.

If you do not have fresh turmeric, you can also use organic turmeric powder. (one teaspoonful) Turmeric has excellent anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties and this is one of the best remedies which is seen to work for most.

Betel leaf remedy

Ingredients

  • Betel leaf (Preferably baby leaves)
  • Edible Slaked lime

Method:

  1. Take three to four betel leaves and wash them.
  2. Blend the betel leaves and half a teaspoon of slaked lime adding a little water to make a thick paste.
  3. Apply it on the affected finger(s) liberally like a pack and wrap it with a piece of cotton cloth.
  4. Keep it on for an hour and then remove it.

Milk skin (Lactoderm) remedy

Ingredients:

  • Two teaspoons of milk skin. (Milk skin is the layer that forms on top of hot milk)
  • Castor oil (one teaspoon)

Method:

  1. With your fingetips, blend the milk skin and castor oil together to form a smooth paste.
  2. Apply this on the infected finger nails and leave it on.
  3. You can repeat this many times a day.

Rice flour remedy

Ingredients:

  • Rice flour (1 teaspoon)
  • Turmeric powder (1 teaspoon)
  • Castor oil (1 teaspoon)

Method:

  1. In a small pan, add castor oil and allow it to get hot.
  2. Add the rice flour and turmeric powder to the hot oil.
  3. Saute for a minute to make a paste.
  4. Apply this paste on the finger nails like a mask and leave it on for a few hours.

White Gulmohar remedy

Ingredients:

  • White gulmohar (Delonix elata) leaves
  • Butter (unsalted)

Method:

  1. Blend the leaves of White gulmohar and butter together.
  2. Apply this paste like a pack and leave it on for a few hours.
  3. Repeat for three days and you will find that the infection heals well.

Aloe remedy

Ingredients:

  • Gel from a fresh aloe vera leaf
  • Turmeric powder
  • Castor oil

Method:

  1. Scrap some gel from a afresh aloe vera leaf.
  2. Add turmeric to the gel and blend the two together in a blender.
  3. Add a teaspoon castor oil to the blend.
  4. Heat this on low flame for just a minute.
  5. Apply the pack on the infected finger nails and wrap it with cotton cloth.

Henna leaf remedy

In south India, henna leaves have been used for nail health for ages now. It is not just worn on the palm, but like finger caps to cover the nails so that the henna prevents infection and strengthens nails.

Ingredients

  • Henna leaves
  • Two crown flowers (Botanical name of this plant is Calotropis Gigantea)

Method:

  1. Blend the leaves of henna and two flowers of crown flower plant
  2. Apply this mix and leave it on for an hour.
  3. Repeat this twice a day.

You can also add leaves of White chaste tree before blending. These leaves aren’t easily available but are have excellent anti-bacterial and healing properties. You can also add little turmeric powder.

A popular green variety – the scientific name of which is ‘Sesbania Grandiflora’ is a popular medicine for any infection. Make this green a part of your regular diet to cure infections and to also prevent recurrence.
