Periwinkle tea to cure diabetes

Periwinkle (Known as Nithyakalyani in Tamil) is a flower that grows in almost all climates. It is a hardy plant found in tropical regions and for centuries has been used in the treatment of diabetes and cancer. Let us see how to make Periwinkle tea to treat diabetes. Both the leaves and the flower of the plant have anti-diabetic properties. We will be using the flower to make the tea in this recipe.

While I may not be able to explain regarding how effective this flower is in the treatment of cancer without more research, it can help in reducing blood sugar levels to a great extent.

In continuation to this its other parts (of Periwinkle plant) like root, stem & flower have active components like alkaloid, flavonoids, steroids and phenolic acids which effectively make it in usage as antimicrobial, anti diabetic, anti- syndrome, antioxidant. (Tolambiya & Mathur, 2016)

Evidence 2

Vinca alkaloids have been generally included in combination chemotherapy regimens for medicinal therapies. They do not have cross-resistance with drugs that alkylate DNA and have a different mechanism of action. They have been used to treat diabetes, high blood pressure and have been used as disinfectants and anti-cancer. (Moudi, et al., 2013)

Evidence 3

The action of whole plant (Periwinkle) extracts on the pancreatic beta-cells and absence of acute toxicity may offer a new hope to the diabetics in future.

From the above discussion it conclude that alcoholic whole plant extracts of Vinca rosea at high dose (500 mg/kg) exhibited significant antihyperglycemic activity than whole plant extract at low dose (300 mg/kg) in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. (Mohammed, et al., 2010)

Warning

Let me warn you here – High dosages of this flower or its leaf can cause instant drop in blood sugar levels and is hence consume a small amount periodically for gradual decrease in sugar levels.

Pregnant women with Gestational diabetes are strictly warned against the use of this tea.

Periwinkle is also a toxic plant and high doses may have poisonous effects. Hence do not drink this tea unless you have consulted with a natural medicine practitioner. Clearly inform the practitioner regarding all your current medications so that he can suggest the suitable course of action.

Periwinkle tea to cure diabetes – DIY

  • 4 – 5 flowers Periwinkle (Known as Vinca in some regions)
  • Water
  1. Periwinkle flowers are very hardy and can be grown in small pots in your house. You will need a handful of flowers and teaspoon of honey to make this tea.
  2. Place the fresh flowers in teapot infuser.
  3. Pour boiling hot water on the flowers.
  4. You can see the flowers losing their color even as you pour the water. Allow the flowers to steep in for around 8 minutes.
  5. Remove the infuser. You do not have to strain it with your fingers. The tea is quite bitter- we do not want to make it inedible,
  6. Pour the hot tea in a tea cup.
  7. Drink this tea thrice a week. Drink this tea in the morning 30 minutes before your breakfast.

Rosy Periwinkle as it is often called is safe when consumed as a tea.

Advised dosage is once or twice a week.

Check with a Siddha or any such natural medicine practitioner before consuming this tea regularly.

    I was told to take 20 periwinkle leaves and pour over 500ml of hot water, bring to boil and simmer for 15 minutes. Pour into tea cup and drink three times a week. I wonder if I could keep this mixture in the fridge or bottle it or is it easy to keep. I only drink about 200ml at a time.
