Hair is a fiber or filament of protein that grows on the skin. Hair is made of several layers which are mainly classified as cuticle, cortex and medulla. In other words each strand of hair comprises of medulla, cortex and cuticle. The innermost region is called medulla, the middle region is cortex and the outer covering is called cuticle.
What causes frizzy hair?
When the outer cover or cuticle rises, it allows moisture to enter the strands causing swelling of the strands. Such swelling make the hair rough and curly which eventually make the hair frizzy. Frizz occurs due to curls and toughness of the hair.
Hair will be smooth only when the cuticle is moist. But when the cuticle raises allowing moisture to enter the cortex, cuticle become dry. Wetness of the hair and dryness of the cuticle are different, which need not go together.
Extreme humidity, taking bath in chlorinated water, application of hair products that normally contain chemicals that makes the cuticle dry and use of blower dryer regularly are the main causes for occurrence of frizz in the hair.
Curly and thick hair are more prone to frizz particularly during summer due to higher level of humidity.
Home remedies to treat frizzy hair
Irrespective of the causes of frizz in the hair home remedies are available to treat, prevent and cure it.
Even though visiting a hair spa regularly may relieve the problem of frizz, it is not desirable as chemical based products used by the saloons are bound to cause adverse side effects both on the hair and scalp. Here comes home remedies handy.
Some of the time tested home remedies for both preventing and curing frizzy hair are:
Coconut oil is high in protein. Since frizz in the hair occurs due to loss of protein and dehydration of the strands, use of coconut oil is an instant home remedy. Coconut oil is a hydrating oil too. However application of the oil to get rid of frizz is a delicate affair. Following the appropriate method is important to remove frizz.
Before applying coconut oil, the hair need to be shampoo washed once and the water in the hair squeezed out.
Excess water can be removed by wrapping with a soft towel without much rubbing.
Hair blower or drier should not be used to remove water.
Once the hair is dried a little amount of coconut oil is rubbed between the hands and gently applied to the hair ensuring spread of oil on the entire area avoiding accumulation of oil in any particular area.
Alternately, a few drops of the oil may be poured on the comb instead of using the fingers, and thereafter gently combing the hair in order to remove frizz.
Repetition of the process on a daily basis produce good results.
Olive oil also can be used as a substitute for coconut oil.
Hot oil massage
A mixture of coconut oil and olive oil of equal quantity with one or two teaspoons of almond oil is heated up and the hot oil mixture is used to massage the frizzy hair. After massaging for some time the hair is left as it is for about an hour and then shampoo washed. While massaging, the warm oil penetrates into the hair roots and scalp pores much better than any normal oil. This massage is done twice a week to strengthen the cuticles and to prevent frizz formation.
Lemon juice bleaches hair and scalp of the chemical build up in the hair due to various applications used. This is a very simple home remedy. Application of diluted lemon juice in water and then a cold water wash remove the frizz. It is enough to use this treatment only once a week.
Whipping the egg (after removing the shell) with warm water and applying it on the scalp and hair remove the frizz. Egg is a natural moisturizer in addition to removing the excess oil from the scalp produced by the body. Egg also kills the bacteria in the scalp and facilitate healthy growth of hair.

This is done once in a week which restores the moisture to the cuticle and remove dryness. A mixture of honey with yogurt also applied to derive the same benefit as both honey and yogurt nourish the hair.
