What is onion water?

Onion water or onion juice is basically the juice that is made by blending onions and straining to get an extract. The juice of onions or onion water has various health benefits. This is a very powerful drink and can be made easily at home.

Both the extract of onion as well as the essential oil of onion have therapeutic benefits and are used in the treatment of various ailments.

Health benefits of onion water

To cure asthma

For years, onion water has been used in traditional medicine in the treatment of asthma. Now, researchers are trying to identify the compounds present in onion water that helps in treatment of such bronchial disorders and illnesses. The compounds – thiosulfinates and cepaenes are present in the extract of onion. These compounds help to protect against bronchial obstruction and can hence be used in the treatment of bronchial asthma.

A study conducted in guinea pigs showed that Platelet-activating factor (PAF) induced bronchial obstruction in these test subjects was reduced after consumption of onion water.

To cure dandruff

Onion water can be applied topically to cure dandruff. Regular application works for even severe cases of dandruff.

Steps:

  1. Soak a small cotton ball in onion water.
  2. Apply this onion water on the scalp gently covering the entire scalp.
  3. Leave it on for about 20 minutes.
  4. Wash off with your regular natural shampoo.

Anti-inflammatory

Onion juice contains thiosulfinates and cepaenes. These compounds have properties that can inhibit inflammatory cell influx in humans. As a result, they can be used as an anti-inflammatory medicine. Due to the same property, onions can be used in the treatment of swelling in the joint, to treat arthritis and to help in the healing of damaged joints.

Onions also contain Quercetin and bioflavonoids which can lower inflammation, fight pain and help to build better resistance.

For heart health

Onion water can help to reduce cholesterol and can thereby improve heart health. Although garlic is more effective than onion, onion water has also been known to prevent lipid accumulation in the aorta. As a result of this, the extract of onion can have significant impact on heart health and cholesterol levels in the body.

Clear skin

You can drink dilute onion juice (one part onion juice and three parts water) for clear skin. Onion juice has substantial amounts of Vitamins A, B and C. It is also rich in calcium, magnesium,iron and phosphorus. This onion water can help to clear the skin and prevent occurrence of acne.

Regulates blood pressure

A mixture of onion water and ginger extract can help to regulate blood pressure.

Steps:

  1. Chop and onion and extract the juice.
  2. Peel a ginger and grate it.
  3. Squeeze the grated ginger to get the juice.
  4. Mix both the juices together.
  5. Add a teaspoon of honey and mix well.

This mix has to be consumed twice a day to reduce blood pressure or hypertension.

Weight loss

Onion water can reduce cholesterol levels, it can improve circulation and promotes digestion. Due to these reasons, onion water can help to lose weight in a healthy manner. Onion has substantial amounts of fiber known as oligofructose which is a soluble fibre.

Onions contain sulfuric compounds and hence it is important that you only consume small quantities of the extract.

For all the above health benefits, you should only consume about a teaspoonful of the onion water once a day.
