Mustard seeds

Mustard seeds are small brown seeds used in lot of Indian recipes. Mustard seeds are rich in Magnesium, Iron, Calcium and dietary fiber. They also have omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids and are beneficial for overall health. Mustard oil has been found useful to treat skin and hair conditions. Mustard seeds can treat cancer, heart diseases, reduce blood pressure, cholesterol, better digestion, improve immunity, reduce constipation and a lot more. The sulfur in mustard seeds induces the flow of mucus. This helps to reduce chest phlegm, clear congestion and hence helps to reduce wet cough. Honey is very effective as a cough suppressant and even plain honey mixed with hot water can give relief from cough.

A simple recipe made with mustard seeds and honey can help to cure cough – both wet and dry although it is more effective for wet cough.

You can consume one small ball (about ½ tablespoon) of the herbal mixture twice a day to cure cough.

The traditional triple spice remedy for all respiratory problems is Tirikadugam. It is the combination of three herbs, dry ginger (Sukku), pepper (Milagu) and long pepper (Thippili). Both fresh ginger and dry ginger can cure sore throat and cough effectively.  Black pepper has properties that can induce the flow of mucus and thereby reduce wet cough by addressing the root cause. In addition, pepper acts as a cough suppressant and can hence provide relief from incessant cough. Due to the presence of anti-biotic properties, pepper can fight common cold and cough causing bacteria.  Similar to ginger and pepper, long pepper can also reduce cold, cough and their symptoms. It can also soothe the throat and provide relief from cough.

The three spices specified are taken in the ratio 1:1:1 and made into a fine powder. See the detailed recipe here.

Tirikadugam is used both for prevention and as a cure. You can drink 100 – 150 ml of tirikadugam drink daily for cure and every alternate day as a prevention.
