Carom seeds (ajwain) remedy
Carom / caraway / Ajwain seed is a spice used predominatly in Indian cooking. Caraway seeds are rich in Iron, calcium, magnesium and vitamin B6. This spice contain thymol and has anti-spasmodic and carminative properties. Due to this reason, carom seeds have been used in Ayurveda for their ability to improve digestion and reduce flatulence. Churna (herbal powder) made as a cure for indigestion generally contains substantial amounts of these carom seeds.
Due to the nutrititional value of carom seeds, they are also benefical for skin, hair and bone health. Carom seeds are in fact widely used for internal consumption to stop hair loss. Since they consist of large amounts of dietary fiber and potassium, these seeds are also good for overall health.
When consumed as a herbal tea / decoction, carom seeds can reduce acidity and acid reflux. The essential oils present in the seeds helps in this. The recipe here shows how carom seeds and jaggery can be used together to cure acidity.
Take 1/4 teaspoon in the morning and 1/4 teaspoon in the evening to avoid acidity.
Gulkand is nothing but a jam made with fresh rose petals and a sweetening agent such as refined sugar, honey or palm sugar. It has lot of anti-oxidants in it due to which it helps to boost immunity. In addition the rejuvenating and hydrating properties of rose petals can help to fight acidity and GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease). Many face heart burn and acidity due to pitta or body heat. The cooling properties of gulkand helps to reduce this and in turn reduces acidity. Always use honey or palm sugar to soak the rose petals in.
Indian Ayurvedic practitioners typically advise a dosage of 1 – 2 spoons of gulkand each day.
Herbal juice with lemon
Ginger is extremely good for digestion. Ginger has properties that can relieve discomfort or pain due to heartburn. Peppermint reduces flatulence, helps to absorb nutrients, prevents excess secretion of stomach acids and soothes the digestive system. Although there is a common misconception that lemon cause acidity, lemon is naturally an antacid and can reduce acidity to a great extent.The extract of lemon produces calcium carbonate. This neutralizes digestive acids and reduces the occurrence of acidity. The combination of ginger, peppermint and lemon juice along with saliva works well against acidity.
Drink 1 glass of this herbal juice daily to combat acidity, heart burn and GERD.
Saffron provides lot of nutrients. Just 100 gm of saffron provides 310 calories of energy, 1724 mg of potassium, 80 mg Vitamin C, 65.37 gm carbohydrates, 11.43 gm of protein, dietary fiber, fat, vitamin B6, folate, riboflavin, iron, magnesium, calcium, zinc and sodium. There are various health benefits of this aromatic spice. It is useful in the treatment of asthma, cough, whooping cough, atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries), flatulence, depression, heartburn, pain, cancer and hemoptysis. For years, Indian women have been consuming saffron during their pregnancy. This is due to the digestion enhancing properties of saffron. Saffron has been proven to have the potential to form a membrane and through this, protect from the gastrointestinal acidity which causes indigestion.
Drink 150 ml of Saffron milk daily before you go to bed.
Basil leaves milk
Holy basil leaves have been traditionally used for respiratory problems in Siddha and Ayurveda. The leaves are rich in Vitamin C and A. It also has manganese, potassium and dietary fiber. Holy basil leaves can also cure indigestion. The leaves of Holy basil can decrease excess production of stomach acids and can fight acidity and GERD. Althought the mere chewing of Holy Basil leaves can provide relief from acidity, combining with cold milk can work wonders.
You can consume 2 glasses of this milk any time of the day.
