Simply put, insomnia is difficulty to sleep. Sleeplessness can be due to various reasons and the degree of insomnia can vary from individual to individual. But, Ayurvedic and herbal remedies can help to cure insomnia. Some effective remedies for insomnia are explained below with the recipe.

Effective home remedies for Insomnia

Bananas

Bananas have nutrients that induce sleep. The key nutritional element in banana which is magnesium, relaxes muscles and relieves stress. Another important element, Tryptophan which is basically an amino acid also helps in the treatment of insomnia. This Tryptophan helps to raise serotonin levels in the body and hence regulates human sleeping pattern.  Similarly cumin seeds due to their mild sedative properties can help to promote better sleep. The same amino acid Tryptophan is also present in honey and hence the remedy here uses honey as the binding agent to bring bananas and cumin seeds together.

Poppy seeds

Poppy seeds or Khus khus is used in desserts, shakes and various other recipes. These seeds are rich in Omega 6 fatty acids and one of the best vegan sources in EFA. Thses seeds are rich in Anti-oxidants, protein and dietary fibers. In addition to all these, poppy seeds have sedative properties that can help to cure insomnia. Desi ghee(or homemade ghee) is similar to khus khus seeds in many properties – ghee is rich in Omega 3 and 5 EFAs, it can provide good cholesterol to the body and can also induce sleep. Ghee is used for various other medicinal benefits for years in many cuisines and in Ayurveda.

How to use Khus khus to treat insomnia

Chikoo or Sapota

Chikoo or Sapota fruit contains various essential vitamins such as A, B, C, E, iron, phosphorous, calcium, and dietary fibres. All these are good for health and can be consumed by people of all ages. This remedy however does not suit those diagnosed with diabetes since Chikoo is considerable higher which are all good for overall health. In addition to the above properties, chikoo has sedative and anti-depressant properties. For this reason, this remedy is perfect for those who are suffering from lack of sleep due to stress.

Recipe:

The recipe shown here made with chikoo, milk and jaggery can help to induce sleep.

Dosage:

Consume one cup of this preparation every day.

Chikoo to treat insomnia

Nutmeg milk

Nutmeg (Jaathikkai in Tamil) has been used for skin health and as a body detox for centuries Nutmeg when applied topically can heal the skin and cure various skin ailments. Nutmeg is rich in dietary fiber, thiamin, Manganese and Magnesium. Consumption of nutmeg can improve quality of sleep due to its mild sedative properties. In Tamil medicine, a pinch of nutmeg paste is given to babies to improve their sleep cycles. But always use little of the paste of nutmeg bearing in mind that it is a sedative.

Long pepper (Thippili)

Long pepper (Known as Thippil in Tamil) is a spice that has been traditionally used to make the Indian soup / Rasam. This spice has been known to cure respiratory isorders,common cold, cough and such ailments. In addition, long pepper alos has properties that can cure sleeplessness. As explained in the above remedy using poppy seeds, ghee can also be a remedy for sleeplessness. In this recipe, we hence use long pepper and ghee to cure insomnia.

Vetiver water

Vetiver which is a root used across India for better health. While the fragrance of vetiver has made it a popular essential oil for its de-stressing properties, vetiver also has other health benefits. Vetiver can reduce stress, reduce body heat, improve energy levels and cure sleeplessness.
