Vasambu (Acorus Calamus) for babies – DIY

  • Vasambu (in Tamil)
  • 1 teaspoon Honey ((organic if possible))
  1. Keep required ingredients ready for the preparation.
  2. Char vasambu in flame. You can use a candle or use the flame from your gas stove.
  3. Use a mortar and pestle to extract powder from the charred vasambu.
  4. Add a pinch of vasambu powder to a few drops of honey and feed the baby. You can increase or decrease the amount of honey as per your preference.
  5. The charred vasambu can be stored for later use. Make sure you store it in a clean and dry container.

Charred Vasambu powder can be given to babies of all ages. For very small babies (1 – 6 months), use breast milk instead of honey.

  • The powder can be mixed with water and applied as a tika on the forehead of babies (popular practice in India).
  • This powder can be mixed with coconut oil and applied externally on the baby’s tummy for gas related problems.

    Hi

Great article about the benefits of vasambu 🙂 really helpful to all new moms, honey is not recommended for babies below 1 year so till one year it can be mixed with breast milk and can be given to baby.

Thanks Hemapriya.. Well, yeah guess some do say honey is not recommended below 1 year. But we were all given vasambu with honey – but just two drops of it and it was perfectly fine. But then, breast milk is always safer.
